Anti-Bullying Performances 2021

Every year we work with schools to support their Anti-Bullying policies and strategies.  Much of this work happens in November, when we recognise National Anti-Bullying week and take a stand against bullying in all its forms.

In 2021, we’ll be touring one Anti-Bullying performance – You, Me and Us, a show we first premiered in 2014.  The play has been updated and refreshed for 2021.

  • Performances take place in your school hall and last for 45 minutes.
  • They can be watched by everyone in school from Reception to Year 6.
  • After each performance our actors do a quick round up and Q & A with all pupils.

The performance:

  • Shows what bullying can look like
  • Demonstrates the impact bullying can have on people
  • Explores the causes of bullying
  • Gives practical ideas about how we can prevent and stop bullying

Altru performances are fantastic Anti-Bullying assembly ideas, as everyone receives the same message, at the same time.  The performance generates lots of important discussion back in class.

Following the performance, we offer a free workshop for 1 class or group (maximum of  35 pupils) who may need some additional support or intervention.  You also receive a Resource Pack, full of activities for teachers to do after the performance.

“The performance of You, Me and Us was great! It was really educational and the kids felt that it was really funny. The workshop was a great way to learn new things and got pupils working together well. Children understood the message that it’s OK to be different. They loved working with a group and the Altru staff were great! They were very engaged and loved the drama activities! We have had Altru in school before and it is always a great experience. 10/10.”   St Mary & St Paul’s Primary School, Knowsley

“Informative and entertaining , very modern and engaging. The workshop tied in well with the performance. Children really enjoyed it and understood the theme, they liked the games and different activities.”  Greenfields Primary, Hertfordshire

“Fun and practical. All children encouraged to be involved and all were engaged and interested”  Florence Melly Community Primary, Liverpool

The Wind in the Willows

Our love of literary adaptations continues with The Wind in the Willows, which has been charming school audiences since Christmas 2015.

The 60-minute play for the whole school (Reception to Year 6) allows children to access Kenneth Grahame’s classic story in a new way.  Using the original text coupled with modern language and brand new songs by Ed Poole, the performance is a real treat for the whole school and has something to appeal to every age bracket in the audience.

At Altru we’re passionate about encouraging children to read both modern and classic literature.  We believe that avid readers make great writers, creators and thinkers – and that there’s a story out there for everyone. It’s an absolute pleasure to introduce this story to a new young audience – and inspire them to pick up the book for themselves.  Our performance has significant links to the National Curriculum for English at Key Stage 1 & 2, click on the document link for more information: Wind in the Willows National Curriculum Links

“Fun, funny, engaging, pacey, excellent set and super acting. You brought the story to life for children beautifully!” Miss Ashton, Chorlton C of E Primary

“Fantastic – children really enjoyed it and loved being able to join in. They followed the story and loved the characters and singing along to the music! Thanks!” Mr Simpson, Heald Place Primary School

Wind in the Willows is returning to schools, libraries and community venues in December 2021 – January 2022.

If you’re in a school then get in touch asap to secure your date.  If you’d like to commission the play for your non-school venue then get in touch for a chat using the details below.

You can also take a look at more Wind in the Willows photos here on our flickr page, to see the play in action!

Indus Valley – Ancient Civilisations

Our Indus Valley drama day is brand new for 2021 – and is an amazing wow day to introduce the topic and get children excited about the subject.

Children work with our experienced drama practitioner, working creatively to learn all about the Indus Valley, including:

– When the civilisation existed in accordance with the history of the world
– The jobs of the Indus people and daily life they lived
– The houses they lived in, how they were constructed and why they were important (including things they invented such as a flushing toilet and drainage system)
– The location they lived in between the rivers and how this helped and hindered their daily life
– Inventions and creations of the Indus people
– The Himalayan Mountains
– Toys and games the children played
– How the rich and poor lived
– Animals of the time
– Why their cities collapsed

All of our History in a Days encourage children to become more curious about the history of the UK and the wider world. Our scripts are written to encourage enquiry and discussion and allow children to develop chronological knowledge, as well as contextual understanding of how people lived and survived and the impact of historical periods on how we live today.

LEARN AND PRESENT:

For one class of pupils. A fun, immersive day with a performance!

A Learn and Present day is a fun and engaging day that really motivates your pupils  to learn and discover. They’ll spend a full day with one of our talented practitioners, they’ll participate in drama activities, play games, sing songs, and have loads of fun – all while learning about the Romans.  Across the day they’ll explore what life was like in the Indus Valley.

At the end of the day the class present their learning as a performance which is packed with information and facts. The performance is developed by the class across the day and is a huge achievement for them all.  They present with music, costumes and props to an invited audience of parents and to the rest of the school.  It’s loads of fun and the chance to share their learning helps to make the experience memorable and meaningful for pupils.

EXPLORE:

For up to 4 classes of pupils. An action-packed day of workshops for up to 140 children.

The Explore format is perfect for larger schools as it gives you up to 4 x 60 minute workshops in one school day (you can also do 2 workshops in a day – splitting the day into morning and afternoon.)  Each class works on the topic, learning historical information, facts and figures.  They also spend time thinking about how life in the Indus Valley was different from our lives today.  All learning is delivered through drama games and activities which makes the session fun and accessible to all.

You can also build an EXPLORE day with 4 different topics based on the needs of each class. Pick and Mix your topics from across our wide range of options.

“We had a wonderful, informative and interactive day. Stacey from Altru had a lovely manner with the children and they responded very well to her. Feedback from the children was very positive and having the opportunity to share their performance as the end of the day was fantastic.” Paula Heath – St Thomas More Catholic Primary School

English in a Day sessions promote reading and imagination, allow children to unlock their creativity and bring books to life!  Sessions are planned to motivate children to explore a text in a creative and fun way, making it more accessible and memorable and making sometimes complex books (Shakespeare for example) easy to understand.

Eyes Open – Drug & Alcohol Awareness for Year 6

Eyes Open is an important PSHE performance for year 6 pupils.  We are incredibly proud of the impact Eyes Open has had (and continues to have) on children’s understanding about drugs, alcohol, peer pressure and transition from primary to secondary school.  The play has toured schools since 2008.

Download links to the new Statutory Relationship Education and Health Education Guidance

The 50 minute performance, which takes place in your school hall, is hard hitting and engaging. The story follows The McCleary family and their interactions with both legal and illegal drugs. Your Year 6 pupils watch the performance and then all take part in a workshop, where they explore the choices made by the characters and the consequences of these choices. The whole session (either a morning or afternoon in your school) allows pupils to explore a difficult subject creatively, giving them the chance to ask questions and develop understanding.

The whole session is an invaluable tool for Year 6, as it helps them learn about:

  • the physical and psychological effects of drug use
  • the role of legal and illegal drugs
  • the causes and effects of drug use
  • peer pressure
  • addiction
  • friendship and relationships

“As a year 6 teacher I have booked Eyes Open for the last 5 years and it never fails to impress. Fun, interesting and hard hitting – it really delivers!” Mr Breslin, St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, Wigan

“Very good and well organised. All children very engaged which was brilliant to see. Workshops after the play were particularly good – Altru staff had a great approach to working with the children and did a fantastic job” Miss Tittle, Kew Woods Primary School, Sefton

“Absolutely outstanding. It covered a variety of legal and illegal drugs and the message was delivered in a poignant manner. Thank you very much – one of the best productions / workshops I’ve experienced as a teacher.” Mrs Drury, St Clare’s RC Primary School, Manchester

“The children were engrossed in the play and workshop from start to finish – this would not have been the case in a science lesson! The children wanted to learn and none of them felt excluded for not knowing as much as others. Throughout the Eyes Open team made the children feel that no answer was wrong or silly. Fantastic, professional performance that the children really enjoyed and learnt a lot from.” Lunts Heath Primary School, Halton

Eyes Open is a 50 minute performance followed by a one hour workshop and accompanied by a free resource pack.

There is a short video about Eyes Open to watch below.  If you’d like to chat to us about Eyes Open and its suitability for your pupils, give us a call on 0151 443 0333.
