Wind in the Willows

Our love of literary adaptations continues with the wind in the willows, which has been charming school audiences since Christmas 2015.

The 60-minute play for the whole school (Reception to Year 6) allows children to access Kenneth Grahame’s classic story in a new way. Using the original text coupled with modern language and brand new songs by Ed Poole, the performance is a real treat for the whole school and has something to appeal to every age bracket in the audience.

At Altru we’re passionate about encouraging children to read both modern and classic literature. We believe that avid readers make great writers, creators and thinkers – and that there’s a story out there for everyone. It’s an absolute pleasure to introduce this story to a new young audience – and inspire them to pick up the book for themselves.

Watching the performance can help children to:

Develop pleasure in reading, motivation to read, vocabulary and understanding

Become familiar with a traditional tale which is a cornerstone of our British literary heritage.

Develop and maintain positive attitudes to reading.

Increase their understanding of a whole book (not an extract) as the play tells the whole story of Toad and his adventures.

Learn about cause and effect in narrative, with a particular focus on the development of characters and the choices made by the writer.

Meet books and authors that they might not choose for themselves.

The performance is accompanied by a FREE resource pack which will allow your pupils to extend their understanding, and the easy to follow activities will further develop the following aspects of the English curriculum:

Retelling of stories

Recognition of and understanding of themes within literature

The link between fictional stories and own experience

Increased vocabulary

Participation in discussion about books, evaluating how authors have used language and considering the impact on the reader

Considering how authors have developed characters and settings [in what pupils have read, listened to or seen performed.]

The resource pack is set out in three tiers and contains activities suitable for KS1, Lower KS2 & Upper KS2.
