Homophobia

This performance and workshop is part of our Challenging Choices programme, which pairs a short monologue performance with an engaging workshop – allowing young people time and space to explore their ideas and develop their opinions through the story of a fictional character.

Luke has always known he’s gay – and it’s something he’s ok with. But he’s worried about the reaction he’d get from family and friends if he was to open up and be honest. And the lads in school make things much worse, always winding each other up and making fun of other people in school too. When they turn on Luke, making fun of him and accusing his of fancying his best friend Callum, things go too far – leaving Luke sad and vulnerable, and not knowing where to turn.

This performance, delivered by a single actor, is part of a one hour / 90 minute session which helps young people explore the impact of homophobia and that words and actions can have significant consequences.

Topics covered

The young audience watch the performance and, afterwards, take part in discussion-based workshop activities, led by our experienced team of actor educators. The session is a safe space for discussion and reflection, and young people are encouraged to explore the choices made by the character and the different potential futures.

Through the use of a fictional character, young people can explore:

The impact of homophobia and homophobic bullying.

Their use of language and the words they choose.

How we view others who we deem different from ourselves.

The importance of mutual respect, understanding and empathy.

Friendship.

Sources of advice and support.

Suitable for Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4. We make minor adjustments to the script and change the workshop plan to suit each key stage.
